Fish Oil Reduces Inflammation and Improves Symptoms in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients
Abstract
Objective: This study investigates the effects of fish oil on inflammatory markers in rheumatoid arthritis.
Context: Rheumatoid arthritis involves chronic inflammation. Fish oil has anti-inflammatory properties but evidence is mixed regarding efficacy in RA.
Methods Used: A randomized placebo-controlled trial in 60 RA patients. Fish oil (2.6 g/day EPA+DHA) or placebo was given for 3 months alongside conventional treatment. Inflammatory cytokines were measured.
Researchers' Summary of Findings: Fish oil significantly reduced circulating TNF-a, IL-1B, IL-6 and CRP compared to placebo. It also lowered disease activity scores. No adverse events occurred.
Health Implications: Fish oil suppresses inflammatory cytokines in RA patients, reducing disease activity. Adding fish oil to treatment regimens may improve outcomes. However, effects may depend on dosage.
