Navigating Through Heart Health: Fish Oil's Role in Preventing Cardiovascular Events
Abstract
Objective: This meta-analysis examines the effects of fish oil supplementation on cardiovascular outcomes like heart attack, stroke and death.
Context: Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have anti-inflammatory properties that may benefit cardiovascular health. But previous studies have had inconsistent results.
Methods Used
Approach: A systematic review and meta-analysis methodology was utilized to pool results from randomized trials of fish oil supplementation.
Data Collection: 10 clinical trials with over 77,000 participants were included. Fish oil dosages ranged from 226 to 1800 mg per day. Cardiovascular endpoints were tracked for 1 to 6 years.
Researchers' Summary of Findings
Impact on Health: Fish oil supplementation was associated with lowered risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular death. The reduction in relative risk was statistically significant.
Health Implications: Fish oil supplementation, particularly at higher doses, significantly reduces risk of major cardiovascular events. Wider adoption should be considered.
