Ironing Things Out: The Optimal Iron Strategy for Women
Abstract Summary
Objective: This study investigates optimal iron intake for improving iron status in menstruating women.
Context: Iron deficiency is one of the most prevalent micronutrient deficiencies globally. Menstruating women are especially vulnerable due to increased iron demands.
Methods Used: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials on iron supplementation in menstruating women. Iron status biomarkers were pooled using a random effects model.
Researchers' Summary of Findings: Moderate iron doses (60-80 mg/day) were found to be optimal for improving iron status. Higher doses did not confer additional benefits and had more side effects. Screening and targeted supplementation strategies are recommended.
