The Role of Vitamin C Supplementation in Oxidative Stress and Immune Function: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Abstract
Objective: This study investigates the antioxidant and immune-boosting effects of vitamin C supplementation.
Context: Vitamin C is an essential micronutrient with antioxidant properties. It also supports immune function. The benefits of vitamin C supplementation have been studied for various health outcomes.
Methods Used: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on vitamin C supplementation was conducted. Studies examining biomarkers of oxidative stress and immune function were included.
Researchers' Summary of Findings: Vitamin C supplementation significantly decreased oxidative stress biomarkers and increased levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines. These effects were greater with higher doses.
Health Implications: Daily vitamin C supplementation can enhance antioxidant defenses and support immune function. This may translate to reduced risk of chronic diseases related to inflammation and oxidative stress.
