60 Days Carnivore Diet Pros and Cons Thus Far
In this article, I will share my experience and discuss the pros and cons of adopting a carnivore diet for the past 60 days.
I have encountered challenges and witnessed remarkable benefits throughout my journey, particularly in two key areas.
The number one pro of going to Carnivore has been conquering my sugar cravings, which had plagued me for years.
While I have made intermittent progress in the past, this time, I found success by incorporating raw dairy and the REBEL brand of keto ice cream into my diet.
These alternatives helped me resist the temptation of indulging in organic vanilla ice cream, my usual cheat treat.
The second significant benefit I observed was a general reduction in appetite. Having practiced intermittent fasting for over three years, I thought my appetite was reasonably balanced.
However, going Carnivore took it to another level, surprising me with further appetite reduction.
Embracing Simplicity and Reducing Food Waste
Simplicity has become another advantage of my carnivore meals. Breaking my fast with a perfectly cooked grass-fed ribeye or strip steak generously covered in butter and wild pink salt has become a delightful routine.
I have honed my cooking technique to achieve medium-rare steaks consistently. My second meal comprises ground meat, raw egg yolk, canned or frozen fish (such as sardines, oysters, and clams), and some raw dairy.
The simplicity of these meals significantly reduces food waste, as most perishable items come from the plant kingdom.
I saved money by eliminating these foods from my diet, and almost nothing goes to waste.
Discovering the Unexpected Rewards
The cumulative effect of the aforementioned benefits has significantly reduced eating out at restaurants.
Previously, I would dine out frequently, but now I only visit a restaurant once or twice a week, often choosing Chipotle. However, even Chipotle appeals to me less now, given my preference for breaking my fast with a juicy steak.
Steakhouse meals are the only restaurant option that compares, but they tend to be more expensive, and the meat quality in other establishments is not as satisfying.
The improvements in my physique have been an additional boon. While I still have 60 more days to reach my desired level of leanness, the progress I've made without deliberate effort is encouraging.
I feel lighter and stronger, evident in my ability to effortlessly perform 20 strict pushups, with a surprising lack of fatigue compared to my previous performance.
Addressing Challenges with Gut Health and Allergies
Despite the numerous benefits, there are a few cons to consider. One challenge I have faced over the past three months relates to gut health.
Factors such as cedar fever, prevalent in Texas and worsened this year, and the presence of cedar trees on my property have impacted my overall well-being.
Additionally, the carpet in my room, which was infested with allergens from the previous owners' pets, caused a severe allergic reaction. We have removed all the carpets and installed hardwood flooring to alleviate these issues.
Furthermore, we are addressing minor mold problems in the house that may also affect my health.
Compounding these challenges, I experienced food poisoning a few months before allergy season and our move to the new home. This prolonged illness depleted my gut flora, making me more susceptible to weakness, fatigue, and occasional bouts of the common cold.
To address this, I am currently undertaking a gut restore program and plan to share the knowledge and tools I acquire in a forthcoming video.
Considering Individual Factors and Financial Implications
It is important to note that a carnivore diet's perceived benefits and drawbacks can vary depending on individual circumstances.
For instance, if you enjoy frequenting restaurants with friends, adopting a carnivore diet might present some difficulties.
However, one could choose to fast or simplify their options, such as opting for a single burger patty, which can save both money and promote better health. While this may be a con for some, it remains a pro regarding overall health benefits.
From a financial standpoint, transitioning to a carnivore diet may require additional expenditure, mainly if one previously consumed low-quality, inexpensive foods.
However, this can be managed by shopping at bulk retailers like Costco, where affordable grass-fed ground beef and other high-quality animal-based foods are available.
Moreover, eliminating food waste, often associated with purchasing numerous plant foods, contributes to substantial savings.
