Fish Oil and Pregnancy: How Much to Take for Baby's Brain
Abstract
Objective: This study investigates the effects of fish oil supplementation during pregnancy.
Context: Omega-3 fatty acids are critical for fetal neurodevelopment. Fish oil supplementation may benefit fetal brain growth and development. However, optimal dosing is unknown.
Methods Used: A randomized controlled trial provided pregnant women either 600 mg or 1200 mg fish oil supplements from 20 weeks gestation until delivery. Infant cognitive outcomes were assessed up to 18 months.
Researchers' Summary of Findings: Higher dose fish oil supplementation increased gestational age at delivery and resulted in better infant cognitive test scores. Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination were significantly improved versus lower dose.
Health Implications: Higher dose fish oil supplementation during pregnancy may improve fetal brain development leading to long-term cognitive benefits. 1200 mg per day is recommended for pregnant women.
