The Truth About Fish Oil for Heart Health

Abstract 

Objective: This study investigates the effects of fish oil supplementation on cardiovascular health.

Context: Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil have anti-inflammatory properties and can improve cardiac risk factors. However, their role in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease is debated.

Methods Used: A meta-analysis was conducted on randomized controlled trials of fish oil supplements in healthy adults. Outcomes included heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and cardiovascular events.

Researchers' Summary of Findings: Fish oil supplementation moderately decreased heart rate and triglycerides. No significant effects were found for blood pressure, LDL, HDL, or cardiovascular events. Doses above 3 grams per day enhanced the triglyceride-lowering effect.

Health Implications: Fish oil supplements may provide small improvements in some cardiovascular risk factors, but do not significantly impact cardiovascular disease incidence. Higher doses may further lower triglycerides.
