Meta-Analysis Finds Vitamin C May Reduce Pneumonia Risk But Not Common Colds
Abstract
Objective: This meta-analysis examines whether vitamin C supplementation can prevent or treat respiratory infections.
Context: Vitamin C has antioxidant properties that could potentially boost immune function. But its effects on respiratory illness are unclear.
Methods Used
Approach: A systematic review and meta-analysis methodology was utilized to pool results from randomized controlled trials of vitamin C supplementation on respiratory infections.
Data Collection: 29 trials with over 11,000 participants were included. Vitamin C doses ranged from 0.2 to 6 grams per day administered for 2 weeks to 5 years.
Researchers’ Summary of Findings
Impact on Health: Vitamin C supplementation showed a statistically significant protective effect against pneumonia, but no significant effect on the common cold.
Health Implications: Routine vitamin C supplementation may help prevent pneumonia, especially in those with low dietary intake. Further research is needed to confirm effects.
